Werewolves

Paige Hollands
4th Year Ravenclaw

Before my recent studies on werewolves commenced, I had many preconceived notions about werewolves; some false and some correct. I was aware that their transformation occurred during the moon’s monthly cycle, and that after the transformation, the transformer would soon lose all control of themselves, reverting to animal instincts. The transformation is an excruciatingly painful process. They can easily be distinguished from a regular wolf, through differences in the pupils of the eyes, the shape of the snout, and the tufted tail. A werewolf can pass on the illness by biting a normal human. Unfortunately, most of my knowledge of werewolves has been distorted by muggle movies and interpretations and false rumors.

Werewolves do have the ability to control themselves while transformed, as long as they have taken the wolfsbane potion every day the week before the full moon. The Lycanthropy illness is impossible to cure. The effects can only be diminished through the help of the wolfsbane potion. While in its transformed state, the werewolf has the ability to make friendships with other animals. Although, the werewolf has an inevitable desire to do harm to other humans, and if there are no humans around, or other creatures, the werewolf will hurt him or herself. The Lycanthropy illness cannot be transferred genetically through its offspring. Unfortunately, many werewolves are discriminated against, due to their violent nature. They have met with harsh resistance, even having to fight against powerful figures, such as Dolores Umbridge, who passed the restrictive anti-werewolf legislation, making it very difficult for a suffer of the illness to acquire a job.

Throughout the years, many myths about werewolves have erupted throughout the world. For instance, muggles believed that werewolves can be killed with silver, or more commonly, a silver bullet. This is untrue, seeing as silver has no effect on the creature. There was a spell that was rumored to have the ability to transform a werewolf back into a human. The spell, known as the homorphous spell, created by the highly unreliable Gilderoy Lockhart, has no evidence to back it up and has never been tested. No other such spells have been successful or created.

Werewolves:
by Sophia Summers
6th year Gryffindor

The werewolf is a creature that exists only for a brief period around the full moon. At any other time, a werewolf is a normal human. However, the term werewolf is used for both the wolf-like creature and the normal human. A werewolf can be distinguished from a true wolf physically by several small distinguishing characteristics, including the pupils, snout, and tufted tail. A person becomes a werewolf when bitten by a werewolf in wolf-form. Once this happens, the person must learn to manage the condition. The 'Wolfsbane Potion' controls some of the effects of the condition; by allowing the sufferer to maintain their human mind in wolf form, it prevents them from harming others. The potion tastes horrible and very few are skilled enougth to brew it. Nothing discovered in the wizarding world can completely cure a werewolf. Most werewolves live outside normal society and steal food to survive. They generally support the dark lord, whom they think will give them a better life.

This is however not surprising, since they are shunned by the wizard community and are both feared and hated by the common witch and wizard. On every full moon, a werewolf will go through an incredibly painful transformation from a human into a wolf-like creature. They lose the ability to think in a human way, becoming highly aggressive towards humans, even those to whom they are close. Though werewolves usually only infect their victims through biting, they sometimes take it too far and kill their victims.Without any humans nearby to attack, or other animals to occupy it, the werewolf will attack itself out of frustration.

This how ever, many werewolves with self-inflicted scars and prematurely aged from the difficult transformations. The Ministry of Magic attempts to regulate werewolves. By 1637, there was a Werewolf Code of Conduct, and according to Newt Scamander, werewolves have been shunted between the Beast and Being divisions of the Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures for years. At one point, the Werewolf Registry and Werewolf Capture Unit were both in the Beast Division, while at the same time the office for Werewolf Support Services was in the Being Division. Given Kingsley Shacklebolt's friendship with Remus Lupin and the furthering of Muggle-born and house-elf rights after 1998, it is likely that the reforms of the Ministry under Minister for Magic Shacklebolt included less prejudicial treatment of werewolves.

Werewolve Notes

Scarlett Pierce
4th year Gryffindor
Lesson 1

A werewolf is created by a human being bitten during the full moon by a werewolf. It's a magic illness that is transferred by a werewolf's saliva entering another person's blood stream. Anybody can be changed into a werewolf, it doesn't distinguish between Muggle and Wizard blood. Unfortunately, there is no cure for lycanthropy, but there is a way to lessen the effects of the disease. Werewolves are essentially humans for a greater portion of their lives. It's only during a full moon that they transform into a werewolf. On this day, they are unable to think straight or act like themselves. They are taken over by their animal instincts and can not distinguish between friend or foe. To them, everyone is dangerous and the only way they know how to protect themselves is to kill their enemies.

The effects are lessened by the use of Wolfsbane Potion. It has to be taken the day before and the day of transformation. When taken it lessens the effect the wolf has, you're no longer controlled by the animal instincts. They still transform, but they retain their human mind so they're much safer to be around during the full moon. They pose no further threat themselves or to other's around them.

At one point werewolves were persecuted and looked down upon. They were classified as less then human and weren't given the same rights as humans. They were often discriminated against and no one would give them employment. Which is why you don't often see them walking about, not that you could really tell a werewolf in human form from another. So it was not surprising that many werewolves turned against the wizarding world and joined forces with Voldemort. He offered them what the wizarding world refused to, a life with prosecution. It was only after 1998, most people suspect because of the Minister's first hand knowledge of werewolves, that werewolves began to be treated more fairly even without the use of more aggressive measures. They still face some discrimination to this day bye close minded people, but no where near the extent as in 1637.

Defense Against the Dark Arts Notes

Rose Saunders
2nd Year Gryffindor
Lesson 1

There are many different curses that are used in Defense Against the Dark Arts. Most of the curses used can be considered both dark and light, depending on how they're used. These curses are usually only used to protect oneself or during a duel. The most well known would be the Unforgiveable Curses, but as they are illegal to use they're not curses you'll find used just anywhere. Some can be relatively harmless such as; Babbling Curse which causes the person to babble whenever they open their mouth to talk. While others are quite dangerous such as; Fiendfyre which is a dangerous burst of uncontrollable and powerful fire that usually takes the form of a dragon, serpent or chimera.

The Leg-Locker curse is a curse that will cause the victim's legs to lock, preventing them from moving their legs in any manner. They are able to hop around though if they have decent balance. You can only regain the use of your legs with the counter curse.

I've learned that when saying a spell you can't just say it without any emotion behind it. A spell is easier to perform when you put feeling behind it because you need to be confident in yourself when casting. Confidence is key when learning to cast a spell. I've also learned about a few different curses that are used in Defense Against the Dark Arts.

Werewolves:
BY Keegan Blacknight
7th year Slytherin

A werewolf is a human who, upon the rising of the full moon, turns into a fearsome near-wolf. Werewolves can be distinguished from regular wolves by several small distinguishing characteristics, such as the pupils of the eyes, snout shape, and tufted tail. At all other times, they appear as normal humans, though will often seem to be ill as the full moon approaches.[1] This condition is caused by infection with lycanthropy, usually occurring when a human is bitten by a transformed werewolf. There is no known cure, but the effects can be lessened with the Wolfsbane Potion.

This leaves many werewolves such with self-inflicted scars and prematurely aged from the difficult transformation.

Unfortunately, there is no cure for lycanthropy. However, some of the worst effects can be mitigated by consuming Wolfsbane Potion, which allows a werewolf to retain his or her human mind while transformed, thus freeing them from the worry of harming other humans or themselves. Because werewolves only pose a danger to humans, companionship with animals whilst transformed has been known to make the experience more bearable as the werewolf has no-one to harm and will be less willing to harm him/herself. Werewolves are generally regarded with fear and disgust by wizarding society. It is not uncommon for persons known to be werewolves to be shunned by society and discriminated against within the wizarding world. It is very difficult for a werewolf to get a job in the wizarding community, especially after the passing of restrictive anti-werewolf legislation by the prejudiced Dolores Umbridge in the 1990s.
